Crash course to electromagnetic analysis for SCA by Riscure

This course is the perfect way to learn the fundamentals of electromagnetic analysis (EM) for side channel analysis. During 2h the participants to this course will learn about acquisitions of electromagnetic signal, finding the EM “hot-spots” and trace processing. Trace processing includes alignment, filtering, and compression. This is a fundamental step in the preparation of a correlation attack. We will walk the participants through different ways of processing the traces and show the importance of good signal processing on the success of a DPA attack.
This course is meant to be interactive and we will be working with Riscure’s Inspector platform for side channel analysis. Topics covered in the course:

  1. Session EMA-1: Physics of EM emanations
  2. Session EMA-2: Processing of EM signal
  3. Session EMA-3: Exercise: Finding EM hot spot/Design of EM Probe
  4. Session EMA-4: Exercise: DPA on EM traces
  5. (optional) Session EMA-5: Shielding and filtering of noise

Side Channel Analysis Basics

Subject covered include basic and advanced Side Channel Analysis techniques and methods. Topics include power and EM acquisition, alignment and signal processing, leakage detection, SCA cryptanalysis including DPA and CPA and real-time alignment. Exercises will be performed on smart cards and embedded devices using Inspector software and hardware.

Fault Injection

Subjects covered include vulnerability identification, voltage and clock glitching, optical glitching, multi-area optical testing, program flow manipulation, differential fault analysis (DFA), countermeasures and real-time alignment.
